VIENNA/MUNICH (Reuters) – Trainloads of migrants arrived in Austria and Germany from Hungary on Monday as European Union asylum rules collapsed under the strain of a wave of migration unprecedented in the EU.

OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) – The son of Oklahoma’s state labor commissioner was charged on Monday with first-degree murder for the stabbing death of his father.

Former hospital clerk pleads guilty in case of maternity ward data sold to RESP dealers

Shaida Bandali, a former hospital clerk who faced Ontario Securities Commission accusations in connection with the sale of maternity patient information to dealers soliciting clients for registered education savings plans, pleaded guilty Monday to single count of unregistered trading.

An OSC spokesperson said Bandali, who no longer works at Rouge Valley Hospital, entered the plea in the Ontario Court of Justice in Toronto and is to be sentenced Oct. 13.

The OSC, which has taken a growing interest in alleged misconduct among RESP dealers, filed a statement against Bandali last November.

In June, in an unrelated case involving the Rouge Valley Health System and Scarborough Hospital, more serious criminal changes were laid against a registered nurse and an RESP sales representative. That case continues.

Suspect shot after 10 hour standoff with police in Texas

(Reuters) – Police shot an armed suspect multiple times when he fired on a state patrolman at the end of a 10-hour standoff on Monday along an interstate highway in south Texas, authorities said.

Samsung Announces Round ‘Gear S2’ Smart Watch

Samsung today unveiled its newest smart watch, the Samsung Gear S2, which is the company’s first watch that includes a round display instead of one that’s square or rectangular.

Positioned as Samsung’s seventh smart watch release, the Gear S2 comes in three varieties: Classic, standard, and 3G. The Classic version includes a black case with a black leather band, while the standard version includes a dark gray case with a matching rubber band or a silver case with a white rubber band. According to Samsung, the Classic model is for users “who prefer a more timeless watch design,” while the standard model is “ideal for those who are on-the-go and have an admiration for minimal and modern design.”

The third model, the 3G Gear S2, features the same design as the standard model but includes a 3G radio to connect to 3G cellular networks. With dedicated 3G capabilities, the 3G Gear S2 can be used without a phone, unlike the Apple Watch and most other smart watches on the market.

“For the past several years, Samsung has pioneered and advanced the wearables category, bringing brave new concepts to the smart wearables market,” said JK Shin, CEO and Head of Samsung’s IT & Mobile Business. “The Samsung Gear S2 reflects Samsung’s most progressive innovation. It is the perfect complement for any occasion, easily taking you from day to night, from work to workout–and ensuring that you get more out of every moment in your day, by making it smarter and ultimately more personal and fun.”

Each of 11.4 millimeter thick Gear S2 watches includes a 1.2-inch diameter touch display with a resolution of 360 x 360 (302 pixels per inch), a 1 GHz dual-core processor, 512MB RAM, and 4GB of storage space. It charges wirelessly, has two to three days of battery life, and includes NFC, WiFi, and Bluetooth. On the battery front it outshines the Apple Watch depending on use, but it has less storage space than the Apple Watch’s 8GB.

The bezel of the Gear S2 rotates, a feature that’s used to navigate through the operating system to interact with apps, and it also uses dedicated Home and Back buttons. Samsung plans to release apps and watch faces designed specifically for the circular display of the Gear S2. Taking a cue from Apple, Samsung designed a new 24-hour fitness activity log for the Gear S2, which will let users view daily progress and get reminders to help them stay on track with fitness goals.

Samsung’s Gear S2 watch runs the Tizen operating system instead of Android, making it incompatible with the Android Wear app for iOS that Google launched earlier today.

Samsung has not yet released pricing details on the Gear S2 or provided a release date, but the company plans to provide more information at the IFA consumer electronics trade show in Berlin, which starts later this week.

Can 10 Words Really Impact 100 million Women?

“Bring more than 100 million women into the labor force.” These 10 words represent the commitment of 10 Presidents, 10 Prime Ministers and one Chancellor to increase female labour force participation (FLFP) in the name of economic growth. It has been almost one year since G20 Leaders made the commitment in Brisbane, Australia last November. As we get ready for the next G20 Summit in Antalya this coming November, we look for signs of progress.

While the commitment was indeed made by G20 leaders, we all have a role to play in achieving the target.


For our part, G(irls)20 has been pushing for an ambitious FLFP target since 2010. Now that we have got it, what do we do with it? We start by recalibrating our global discussions. The 6th G(irls)20 Summit will take place on October 5th and 6th in Istanbul and will focus solely on increasing female labour force participation.

Featuring global and local experts from the World Economic Forum, IFC, FBI, Carlson Rezidor, TurkishWIN and several other organizations we will look at:

  1. trends in employment so we know where to create these jobs;
  2. cultural, political and security barriers that stand in the way of women seeking and maintaining employment; and,
  3. best practices in the private sector, government and social profit sector.

G20 Leaders have at least 100 million reasons to meet their target. I offer you my top five:

  1. Women’s participation in the labour market is part of the growth and stability equation. If more women work we can reduce the impact of a shrinking workforce;
  2. Significant economic gains will be realized if women are able to develop their full labour market potential. For instance, the GDP would increase in the United States by five per cent, in Japan by nine per cent, in the United Arab Emirates by 12 per cent, and in Egypt by 34 per cent;
  3. For women with children, better opportunities for them will yield better opportunities for their children which, in some cases, will break the cycle of poverty, hunger and poor health;
  4. There is a direct connection between a company’s gender diversity and its financial success. In fact, a recent article in the Guardian noted that Fortune 500 companies with the highest representation of women board members achieved considerably higher financial performance compared to those with the least. Specifically, return on equity was 53 per cent higher, return on invested capital was 66 per cent higher and return on sales was 42 per cent higher;
  5. Gender diversity helps companies attract and retain exceptional women in a labor force where the number of women is growing exponentially.

10 words, 100 million women. It can be done.

5 Truths: What Women Really Want but Are Fearful to Say

While the media puts heavy focus on equal pay, workplace advancement and getting a seat at the table — all things which are needed — there is a whole subculture of women who actually want something more, their lives back.

I dare to say if you ask a woman which she would prefer, a raise or an extra 30 minutes of “me time” each day, she would choose the solitude. A promotion or a “calm, more peaceful existence,” she would choose the latter. A seat at the table or a renewed connection with her significant other, she would opt for the connection.

With women making strides in workplace advancement and 40 percent of us the family breadwinner, it seems we’ve lost sight of what matters most — the pursuit of happiness. A generation of women was sold the myth that we can have it all. Decades later and knee-deep in the quest, many are facing the fact that it’s simply not true and that price of having it all is too high.

From loveless marriages to declining health and even worse, a complete loss of self, women have become numb to their lives.That is until you confront them with it: Sit with a woman and ask her to evaluate her life, from the 9-5 job, after-school activities, homework, grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning, laundry and the volunteer work she’s doing — not to mention her marriage — and she will break down in tears in a matter of minutes.

Why? Because they’ve become numb to their lives and gone on auto-pilot.

I’m certain this blog will elicit angry commentary, but it’s time women are given a voice outside the board room. Am I saying that women should quit their jobs and stay home barefoot and pregnant? Of course not. I own two companies — so clearly that’s the last thing I want. What I do want is for women to be honest about the toll that working two full time jobs — both career and motherhood — is taking on their lives. Rather than pretending everything is picture perfect, we need to start discussing our challenges and coming up with solutions before our daughters follow us down this same joyless path.

It’s not surprising to me that more and more millennials plan to pause their career while starting families; they’ve witnessed the price their mothers have paid in the quest to have it all. For many women, the American dream has become a nightmare and led to a complete loss of self. Our coping mechanism? Going through the motions in attempt to survive.

Once we get honest about the state of our lives, we can enter the board room with ideas and solutions that will address the fact that hey, while we would love to work 50-hour work weeks, attend every client dinner and accept that great promotion; someone has to raise our children. I don’t in any way want to disregard the support men are providing because in truth, they are helping more with the children and household chores than during any other time in history; but women are so brainwashed to believe we have to do it all, to have it all, that in most cases we don’t let the men in our lives help. It’s a vicious cycle, but very real. It’s time we change the mantra from having it all to having your all and redefining the role of the 21st-century woman.

Let me be clear: I don’t have the answers, but I’m in search of them. My goal is to start the conversation — but you have to continue it: Organizations have to stop pretending that men and women are the same and create a better work-life blend — from flextime to virtual office days, increased personal days with or without pay, four day, 40-hour work weeks, to family sick days, because like it or not, our kids do get sick and moms can’t control when; to the possibility of offering a 30-hour work-week. While these are nothing more than ideas, imagine if we all pulled together, both men and women and united in our cry to change business and life as usual for all of us. What if instead of negative comments in this blog people offered out of the box ideas? This is how a movement for change begins.
